Training Academies

Learn From the Best in Our Purpose-built HV Training Facilities

In 2016, H&MV opened our first purpose-built training academy in Limerick, Ireland to the public, fully equipped with RMU’s, Switchgear and Transformers, from industry leading suppliers.

Due to demand, we have created a second bespoke training academy in Dublin, Ireland.

Our course participants have the unique opportunity to learn in a live HV substation that has been modified by our experts to ensure safety and maximise learning. The academy is staffed with experienced senior trainers from varying industries, offering their extensive expertise to engineers and operators.

Our courses are accredited by City & Guilds and Engineers Ireland.

City & Guilds Substation Access & Awareness

City & Guilds High Voltage Switching and Operations Course

The purpose of this 5 day course is to equip personnel working, or associated with, high voltage systems, with the knowledge they require to carry out their functions in a safe and competent manner.

The course is applicable to both those carrying out high voltage operations, be that switching, installation or maintenance works, and persons who deal with these systems from a managerial or supervisory perspective.

The course offers a structured approach to high voltage training, in that all relevant aspects of the subject area are addressed in detail and followed by practical exercises. It will provide participants with a solid foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of the operation of high voltage systems and equipment.

Modules include:

1. Principles of Electrical Safety

2. Lock-Out & Tag-Out (LOTO) & Testing of Isolations

3. Electrical Drawings and Switching Plans

4. Electrical Safety Legislation and Standards

5. Principles of Arc-Flash and Arc-Blast

6. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and High Voltage Test Equipment

7. High Voltage Switchgear and Transformers

8. General Electrical Theory and Concepts

9. Electrical Circuits and Protection

10. Principles of Risk Assessment

City & Guilds Safe Operation & Maintenance Principles of LV Industrial Systems

Our Low Voltage training course consists of 8 modules, in conjunction with practical demonstrations and exercises, delivered over a 3 day period.

This course is ideally suited to Operational & Maintenance personnel including Electricians, Technicians, Contractors, Facility Managers & Supervisors, from a wide range of sectors including Utilities, Data Centre, Industrial, Pharmaceutical and Renewables.

Modules include:

  1. Introduction to Electrical Safety and Low Voltage Network Configuration
  2. Protection Systems and Devices
  3. Understanding of Fault Levels and Arc Flash
  4. Auxiliary and Standby Power Systems
  5. Requirements and Performance of Earthing Systems
  6. Power Quality including Distributing Loads and Harmonics
  7. Requirements and Guidelines for Maintenance and Testing
  8. Operational Safety, including Low Voltage Switching Operations / Lock Out and Tag Out (LOTO)

City & Guilds Substation Access & Awareness

Candidates for this 1 day programme should be seeking an awareness of substations or working in a high voltage substation environment, but not conducting any electrical work.

The course aims to:

  1. Provide candidates with the required knowledge and level of awareness to work in a live substation.
  2. Educate candidates with the ability and knowledge to identify hazards and dangers associated with high voltage
  3. State the responsibility of the employer and employee under the Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 relevant to the safe operation of high voltage equipment and systems
  4. Identify the minimum Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required when working in the vicinity of high voltage equipment.
